The fact is, however, we are in control of whether or not tomorrow will be a better day. In fact, we are in control of whether the afternoon, the next hour, or even the next 10 minutes will be better. We have the choice to sway our focus from our external state, to our internal state. Don't believe me? Its actually simpler than you think. You can start by simply focusing on your breath. When we are not in balance with ourselves our breathing becomes either shorter, faster, or at times almost non-existent. You would be surprised how many people actually forget to breathe in times of stress. When we allow our breath to cheapen, we are depriving our brain from receiving vital oxygen, therefore we can not think or react clearly. Start by taking a few deep breaths with your eyes closed. If you have to lock yourself in the bathroom away from the kids to do this, do it. Trust me, it will be worth it.
Once you get your breathing under control and are able to think more clearly, consider making a list of things you could do to make YOURSELF feel better. These things should directly relate to you, and to things you have control over. For instance, "Making my child stop screaming and crying" is not something to be on your list. However, "Buying myself my favorite flowers", or "Stock up on fast, easy meals" are perfect items for your list. Discover ways to make the everyday tasks simpler. True, you may not be able to control your child, or understand what they need in that moment, so for the time-being, LET IT GO. Trust me, your child is going to present you with many more opportunities to try again!
Exercise is also a vital ingredient to the recipe for inner balance. Don't have time? MAKE IT. You don't have to go to a gym or carve out an hour of your incredibly busy day to work in some exercise. Take advantage of the free exercise programs on your cable, throw the kids in a stroller and go for a walk, or even just jog in place while you are cooking dinner. The goal here is not to get you bikini ready for your next beach vacation in paradise (ahhh...wouldn't that be nice?!?), the goal is to get endorphins flowing throughout your body so you instantly FEEL BETTER. Personally Yoga is my go-to exercise, and I do it solely for the mental and emotional benefits, and the physical results are just a bonus :) Increasing and building your physical stamina will help you to not only feel better, but to have more energy to play a little more with the kids, and perhaps be a little more patient the next time one of them decides to have an all out meltdown over his cars being in a straight line ;)
The bottom line is in order to be the best mother, father, employee, or individual to other people, you have to be the best to yourself. Make balance a priority in life and enjoy the benefits I guarantee are headed your way!
May you find peace and balance in your steps today!
